Bicycle Helmets

So now it’s the law, you have to wear a bicycle helmet!  There are just too many accidents that can scramble the cranium.  There is no reason for the young and older folks alike not to be able to purchase an affordable and safe bicycle helmet. Even at a slower speed riding on a softer path, injuries can occur, and a bicycle helmet can prevent up to 85% of head injuries.  Sure some people say they don’t look “cool”, but there are some pretty snazzy helmets out there and some have personalized decals on them.  We didn’t think seat belts were “cool” either, but statistics have proven they save lives.  And so do bicycle helmets.

It is a fact that bicycle helmets do save lives, and with so many different sports that do require a helmet to be worn you should be only looking for the helmet to which sport you will need it.  For example, if your snow boarding or skiing don’t look at a bicycle helmet. It won’t work.

You might as well get one that fits properly and one that you don’t even notice or feel that it’s on your head.  Once you’ve had a crash and the bicycle helmet is crushed the expanded foam (EPS), which is in most helmets does not recover so (please do replace your helmet). The damage may not be visible.  Some really good ideas to keep in mind are;

Things You Should Consider when buying a Bicycle Helmet

  • Look for adjustable features so that it fits snugly to your head.  Your head should be touching on all sides with no more than 1 inch give in any direction. Your helmet shouldn’t be able to come off no matter how hard you try. If you’re going over the handle bars you want protection and some comfort on landing.
  • Look for a smooth rounded outer shell with no pointy or areas that may catch or snag
  • Ask around, which ones are getting the best reviews.  I’ve heard some great things said on the Schwinn Thrasher bicycle helmet
  • There are bicycle helmets vented for those with pony tails
  • Perspiration vents are very important for your comfort on hot days with frontal vents offering a good air flow. Though bald riders should not choose top vents in case of sunburn. Some have sweat bands as well.
  • Look for the Safety Standard and check out the latest Consumer Reports
  • Price – there again, there are so many, so check reviews in your price range. Try to purchase the best bicycle helmet you can afford.
  • Color should be white or very light so motorists can see you
