What You Should Know as a Parent

As a Parent,  I say “good”, well its about time! It’s the law, your child needs a bicycle helmet, what now?  Hundreds of children are killed every year, mostly with cars, and over 75% die of head injuries.  Of course there are the scraped knees and elbows and many other injuries a lot more severe, some with long term effect.  And don’t discount the anxiety the parents feel! I have personally experienced my son travelling over the handle bars.  It wasn’t very pretty, as in those days bicycle helmets weren’t even heard of. You really need a safe and affordable child’s bicycle helmet now for your child.  Though for children under 1 year of age, it is noted helmets may be too heavy for the neck to support.  When in doubt, take the helmet and consult your pediatrician.  But for the rest who are just starting out take note:

If fit properly with these guidelines, a child’s bicycle helmet can be purchased from $25.00 and up and don’t forget the discount helmets as low as $10.00 and up.  It’s the proper fit whether in expensive or discount that is the key.  So either helmet will benefit if fit properly and your child has a fall. It is noted that properly fit a child’s bicycle helmets will benefit your child’s scooter ride as well. That’s a good thing!

Your child can grow with the helmet. Just about all children’s bicycle helmets come with a few set of foam fitting pads in the helmet and can be removed or added to as a child grows.  They’re heads really won’t grow that fast like their shoe size.  The pads are just for a snug fit and will not affect the performance of the helmet.

Start your young ones early wearing a child’s bicycle helmet, as soon as they get their first tricycle; it will be second nature for them to put one on. Just as the seat belt in the car. Of course if they see the whole family wearing one, that’s another plus. Be a good role model.  And if they see other professional sports figures like foot ball and hockey players wearing one they will want to copy them.  If your child won’t wear their helmet, don’t let them ride their bicycle. Be firm!! They will certainly get the message! Possibly some light decals on the helmet can improve the look as well.

A safety Lesson would be a great first start.  Let them know that the sports athletes all started with one. Let them know they are big boys and girls now and you’re proud of them.  Tell them just like adults, we have to know the rules of the road and know how to drive a car to get a license, part of learning to ride a bicycle is to be responsible and safe and you don’t want them to be hurt. Let them know it’s for their own protection and you don’t want them hurt if they have a fall.

Which one to Purchase. Some child’s bicycle helmets recommended by a Consumers report are the Schwinn Thrasher, Bell Amigo, Bell Trigger or Giro.Me2.  Check them out.  Look for a brighter color, check for a pinch-proof buckle, adjustable straps and pads and an inner one size fits all ring.  Fit it snug so it won’t come off.

Remember to replace the child’s bicycle helmet if any impact crushes some of the foam, so check helmet often to be aware of any buckle cracks or pieces missing.
